The importance of Looking after your hair extensions
Looking after your hair extensions correctly
It is very important that you are Looking after your hair extensions properly.
Having hair extensions makes us feel lovely but we can not stress enough the importance of looking after them as they will soon not look so good if you don’t look after them.
Brushing – this is as important as cleaning your teeth. Use a soft bristle brush as this will help you detangle your hair without damaging it. When it comes to brushing them take care and have patience. Start at the bottom, as you would with your natural hair, detangling that area first before you move up to work on the top sections. Be gentle with you extensions as pulling will cause serious breakage which will turn your gorgeous hair extensions into a frizzy, dingy-looking mess no girl in her right mind would want near her head.
Washing- do not wash your extensions for at least 48 hours after application. This gives the extensions a chance to sit and fall naturally on your head and own hair. After 48 hours you are free to wash them if you wish but be cautious not to put any shampoo or conditioner near the bonds. Always brush your hair and detangle thoroughly before you begin to wash it. The best way to wash your hair when you have had extensions added is to wash the top of your head/scalp as you normally would but in a slower and gentler motion. Then smooth the existing shampoo down the hair rubbing gently with your hands to ensure it gets washed properly. Rub your conditioner into your hands and smooth down your hair starting from your roots and working it all the way down to the ends but avoiding the bonds/micro rings. This is just to prevent the bonds from getting greasy and either slipping down your hair and coming out or building residue underneath the micro rings causing this later on.
Drying- When drying your hair off with a towel do not rub your hair vigorously as this will only cause it to tangle, simply pat or squeeze your hair dry with the towel.
If using a blow dryer it is recommended that you don’t use it on the hottest heat setting, this is to just reduce any chance of melting the bond or causing damage to your natural hair. However it is important that where the hair extension is attached this does not get left wet or damp as it will cause the bond to become more vulnerable and at risk of breakage.

Heated appliances- If you use heated appliances every time you wash your hair then it is best to keep washing to a minimum. Twice a week if you can. This is to put less stress on the extensions, you can wash it as much as you like if your not using heated appliances every time you wash it but if you do normally use them then its best to do this as less as possible. You can use any heated appliance that you would normally use on your hair as long as you don’t get it too close to the ring/bond as it could melt it, this won’t happen to a micro ring as it is metal but can still cause it to slip down the hair. With or without extensions, if you use heat on your hair you should use a protective spray.
It is best to use shampoo’s and conditioners that are specifically for hair extensions as standard high street brands can contain silicone based ingredients or high alcohol levels which can cause bonds to weaken and dry out the hair causing it to become very dry and coarse. Using a leave in conditioner in is good for the hair extensions as they will still need to be given nutrients and vitamins just like your own hair.
So you will have great long lasting hair extensions as long as your Looking after your hair extensions properly.
