Prickly heat is also known as heat rash or miliaria. It is a red and itchy rash on the skin that causes a stinging or prickly feeling and that’s where the name comes from.  Prickly heat usually occurs in hot conditions but it can affect people in the winter if they are wearing too much clothing or sit too close to a heater. Even in summer, the rash is most common on areas of the body that are covered by clothing, but prickly heat can affect any area of the skin.

The rash occurs when sweat glands become blocked normally as a result of excessive sweating. This is because bacteria and dead skin cells can collect in the sweat glands which traps the sweat and subsequently bursts out and irritates the skin. The rash is made up of tiny spots and bumps in an area of red skin.

Prickly heat is not a serious condition but is very irritating so to try and avoid it you can  spend time in the shade and avoid exposure to heat to help lessen the amount of sweat produced. Wear loose cotton clothing as this will also make sweating less likely than if you are wearing synthetic fabrics. 

 If you do find yourself getting prickly heat then calamine lotion will soothe and cool the itchy skin and a  hydrocortisone cream can reduce the itching but this should not be applied to the face and as always it is important to follow the instructions. Generally a prickly heat rash will disappear of its own accord within a couple of days.   It may also help to take an antihistamine tablet.

So we are taking a look at some Simple make up tips for the more mature lady in our blog today.

As we age unfortunately our eye sight is not quite what it used to be so it can become much more difficult to apply our make up.  That is why it is good to keep it simple and that s just what we are going to tell you about today.

A lot of mature ladies still use the same foundation they used 10 years ago but your skin changes not only yearly but also seasonally. In winter months, you may need a creamy foundation and then in summer months you may find your skin becomes oily and a tinted moisturiser is fine. You will find that these days many foundations are formulated with mature, aging skin in mind.  Make sure you use a primer before applying your foundation and keep the foundation light as it will enhance any fine lines if you cake it on. A high lighter added to the cheek bones is a nice subtle way of enhancing your cheeks or a light dusting of bronzer is great for giving you a natural looking glow, but just remember to keep it light.  You can make sure you are not applying too much by not putting too much on your brush and even dusting a little bit off of your brush onto a tissue just to be sure before you apply.

As we said before it can be tricky when your eyesight is not what it was so eye make up can feel almost impossible to do.  This is where you should keep things really simple.  Don’t try using too many different colours when it comes to eye shadow, two colours will be fine.  You need a lighter base colour and then a darker colour to high light the eyes.  Apply your base colour over your eyelid and then take your darker colour and brush a small amount across the crease of your eye lid, going from the outside of the eye into about half way across, you can then use the base colour to blend it in using a blending brush.

Mature ladies should choose a lengthening mascara over a volumising one. The secret is to give your lashes as much length, not bulk, as possible. Volumising mascara can make short, stubby lashes look even more stubbier. When it comes to choosing the colour, if you have a light complexion and blonde or gray hair then a dark brown may look less harsh than a black mascara.

Also using a magnifying mirror could really help when applying your make up, its definitely worth a try.

Alcohol and your skin

Alcohol dehydrates you and your skin which is your largest organ.  This dehydration will happen every time you drink alcohol.  If you drink too much alcohol then you could be depriving your body of vital vitamins and nutrients.  Excessive drinking can also lead to a skin condition called rosacea which is red coloured flair ups across the cheeks.  In more extreme cases too much drinking can cause facial disfigurement.

If you end up too drunk to remember to remove your make up before you go to bed then you are also very likely to have some unwanted friends in the morning, these being spots.

If you’re prone to flushed looking skin, alcohol will only make it worse as excess drinking means your blood vessels lose tone, leaving you with permanent thread veins.  As we said before alcohol dehydrates your skin and this will lead to lines and wrinkles, if you have lines across your neck these are  hereditary, however they will be made worse by drinking too much.  Big drinkers may also find they have worse crows feet as they will be deficient in vitamin A, which is essential to collagen and elastin formation.

Cigarettes and your skin

Since the 1970′s studies have found that smoking causes more skin damage than sun exposure.

Smoking makes all lines worse by damaging the collagen and elastin in the skin that normally gives it its plumpness.  With age, the muscles, fat and bones under the skin shrink and this can lead  to sagging, Smoking deoxygenates the blood so you get less nutrients going to the skin, dramatically accelerating this sagging.  As smoking promotes poor circulation this means your skin will look dull and any dark circles around the eyes will be worse.

And did you know that smoking delays wound healing, including skin injuries and surgical wounds. It increases the risk of wound infection , death of tissue and blood clot formation. The reasons for this are unclear but involve:

• Vascoconstriction and lack of oxygen reaching skin cells
• Decreased collagen synthesis
• Delayed growth of new blood vessels within the wound.

So The effect alcohol and cigarettes has on your skin is pretty serious so think twice if you want to look after your skin.

Todays blog is about Different mascara brushes and what they do.  There are a few different mascara brushes and it can be confusing when it comes to choosing the right one for you, so we are going to explain what they do and then you should be a lot clearer when it comes to choosing your next mascara.

Straight brush- this type of brush is suitable for everyone, one we recommend is Volume fast & perfect by Bourjois, which is a rotating mascara.

Curved multi brush- this brush is great for volume, use one side of the brush then turn it over for the next coat and you will see the volume build up.  The Scandal Eyes range of mascaras by Rimmel are really good example of this brush.

Comb brush- Comb brushes are best for lengthening the lashes so this brush is fab for people with shorter lashes.  Liner effect mascara by Bourjous  is one we would recoommend.

Twisted brush- Twisted brushes would be best for curling the lashes and adding volume as well.  We recommend Lash Domination 10-in-1 Volumising Mascara by Bareminerals.

Dome brush- this brush is a must for anyone with really short lashes but stay away from the dome brush if you have hooded eye lids as you will end up in a bit of a mess.  L’oreals Stiletto mascara comes with a good dome brush.

2 Step brush- these mascaras are applied in 2 steps, the first coat is a primer to build up volume and the second is a comb brush to de clump and separate the lashes.  Be sure not to over do the primer other wise this will clump and have the opposite effect to what you desired.  L’oreals Volume  Shocking 2 step mascara is a great product.

When applying any mascara make sure that you coat each eye in turn, this will give them chance to dry a little bit before applying the next coat and will avoid that awful clumpy look.

Different mascara brushes can be hard to chose but hopefully you now have a better understanding of what some of them do.

The history of eyebrows is interesting and some bits funny  and sometime just plain weird;

1. In Ancient Egypt Queen Nefertiti,  was well as  other Ancient Egyptian women sported arched brows darkened  which they would then darken with powders made from minerals, mush like today.
2. But if ancient Greece  when a cat died in a home, everyone who lived there would shave their eyebrows in mourning.
3.  In both Ancient Greece and Rome it was considered very attractive to have a mono brows  and if they didn’t have one they would use black paint to create one.
4. In the middle ages  the forehead was the most important feature of the medieval period, which is why women often removed their eyelashes and eyebrows.
5. Later in the 15th century, during  Queen Elizabeth rein  people would dye their eye brows  strawberry’ blonde regardless what colour  their hair was.
6. During the Victorian era  it was frowned upon to wear lots of make up and would quite often be thought of as prostitutes  the upper class would leave their brows quite bushy and untamed so they did not get that lable
7. 1920′s – 1930′s women wore their eyebrows extremely thin and straight by way of extensive plucking, lending to a dramatic, pensive look.
8. 1930′s -1940′s eyebrows were still  dark, shiny and severely tweezed brows, but rather than just be  straight lines, they started to be  dramatic high, rounded arches, which sometimes extended all the way to the temple.
9. 1940′s -1950′s a  softer, more natural look came into popularity in the ’40s with heavier, prominently arched brows.
10. 1950′s – 1960′s thick, dark brows that were often penciled in to achieve a bolder, more enhanced look. They retained similar arched shapes to the brows of the ’40s, but the effect was stronger and more pronounced as the defining feature of the face.
11. 1960-1970: Sophia Loren had the most storied brows of the decade, and for good reason: She shaved them off entirely, then would painstakingly pencil them back in using super-short, precise strokes.
12. 1970-1980: A handful of brow looks were favored during this time, including thicker, more natural brows as worn by the hippies of the decade and the thinner, more pronounced arches worn by disco enthusiasts.
13. 1980-1990: Bushy brows were the ticket to ’80s glamour, with Brooke Shields as the cover girl .Thick, un-groomed “caterpillar” brows were all the rage, and a heavy, almost disheveled look was desirable and emulated with the help of brow pencils and powders.
14.   1990-2000: Anyone who came of age in the ’90s will remember the super-thin, over-tweezed brows than  was very popular in this  decade, with stars like Drew Barrymore and Pamela Anderson rocking teeny-tiny arches that often resulted in a perpetually shocked-looking expression. The ’90s were not a good decade for eyebrows.
15.   2000-Present: The early aughties held onto the past decade’s thin brows, but we’ve since gone the opposite way of over-plucking, instead favouring thick, lush looks and natural arches.  brows dominate the catwalk, with everyone from celebrities to regular people using pencils, waxes, powders, gels, and more to emulate the bold, dark, statement brow effect. We’re also seeing a lot of bleaching, both on and off the runway, for a bizarre, otherworldly look.

We talk a lot about how to look after your skin, but today we have decided to look at What does skin do? It’s the body’s largest organ, and if you were to stretch out the skin of the average adult, it would cover 22 square feet (2 square meters, or a little bigger than a twin bed) and weigh 8 pounds  and we rely on it in more than one way.

Besides keeping us nicely packaged, skin performs a host of important functions that are crucial for overall bodily health. Think of your skin as a protective covering that shields your body from germs. It’s filled with white blood cells that are designed to attack any invading harmful bacteria. Signals sent from your skin sound the alarm for your body’s immune system to launch into action when germs have gained entry.

Skin also helps regulate your body temperature.  The blood vessels in the skin contract and dilate depending upon the outside temperature so that our bodies remain near 98.6 degrees F (37 degrees Celsius). When it’s cold outside, blood vessels contract to keep the blood near the surface of your skin from becoming too cool. When it’s hot outside, the same blood vessels expand to encourage heat loss, which causes you to sweat.

As well as doing theses vital jobs, skin provides us with the essential human experience of touch. Nerve endings in your skin send signals to the brain to communicate the sensations you’re feeling: heat, cold, pain, pressure, texture. If it weren’t for your skin and your nerves, you’d miss out on all the things that feel so good to the touch.

Looking after your skin is very important and we are going to tell you a few ways that you can be doing this every day.   Every day life can take its toll on our skin but we should be trying to protect it and look after it the best that we can.

Reduce stress- Studies have linked stress with a weakened immune system, which can then trigger everything from acne flare-ups to eczema. Getting regular exercise and a good night’s sleep and  making sure you have a healthy, balanced diet are all things that can help soften anxiety’s impact on the body  and skin.

Know your skin’s triggers- If you have sensitive skin, avoid perfumed, anti-bacterial and deodorant products which can easily aggravate it. Try buying products especially for  sensitive skin and  stick to fragrance free  products.

Healthy diet- A healthy diet overall is best for you and your skin, one that offers a range of vitamins, minerals, proteins, grains and healthy fats.

Apply your make up the correct way- avoid heavy make up on your face, keep foundation light, there are many products available now that are better for your skin such as tinted moisturisers or pore minimising foundations which are much lighter and therefore kinder to your skin.

Regular facials- having regular facials is something that you may not always have the money or time for but if you do then its a must, even if it only once a month it will definitely help your skin and for those of you that can’t make it to a professional you can do it yourself at home, just make sure you get the correct products for your skin type and cleansing, exfoliating, toning and moisterising at home should be part of your daily routine.

Drink plenty of water- Drinking enough water is important for many reasons, and keeping your skin hydrated is one of them so swap your fizzy drinks and teas and coffees for more water more often.

The worst foods for your skin aren’t nessarly the ones you think of as we have found out!W e’ve all heard of the allegedly ‘forbidden’ foods that supposedly trigger acne breakouts, such as fried and  fatty foods, caffeine, nuts, chocolate and even red meat, but the reality is that in well-controlled statistical studies, these foods do not cause acne breakouts. so then we have to ask ourselves so what foods do cause us to have bad skin?

Here are a few foods the experts suggest  you steer clear of:

• Salt – If you ever  wake up feeling a little puffy around the eyes?  It could be  because you have consumed too much salt.Too much salt can cause some of us to retain water which can lead to swelling, because the skin around the eyes is so thin the area swells easily  but these effects of salt are commonly more age related.
• Shellfish -Shrimp, crab, lobster and also certain leafy greens like seaweed and spinach — are naturally high in iodine, and a diet with too much of this element can lead to acne.However, “these breakouts are based on an accumulated amount of iodine over time, so there’s no relationship between eating high iodine foods one day and breaking out the next, it is recommended  that  people who are particularly acne-prone only  consume these foods a couple of times a month rather than a couple of times a week.
•  Skimmed Milk –  In 2005 a study found that  there was connection specifically between skimmed milk and acne. This is likely because of “a higher amount of bioavailable hormones in skimmed milk, since they cannot be absorbed in surrounding fat, which can then overstimulate the group of glands that produce our skin’s natural oily secretions, according to researchers. while in some people with rosacea, dairy products can also trigger the condition’s tell-tale redness.
• High glycemic foods -Starchy picks like white breads, pastas and cakes, and even corn syrup, are foods that are considered high glycemic  which can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar and possibly cause  out break outs.
• Alcohol - is a natural diuretic, which means the more you drink, the more dehydrated you become. It saps   a lot  of the natural moisture from your skin as well, which can make those wrinkles and fine lines worst.

Drinkable sunscreen -The concept is ground breaking by take 2ml of a flavorless liquid supplement 1 hour before sun exposure, and then 2ml every 3 hours afterward while still in the sun for SPF 30 protection But we should be noted that these claims have not been evaluated so we do not know if it does what it says but it would be cool if it did.

Drinkable skincare solutions -Forget about slathering on anti-ageing creams the new skincare saviours are now arriving in liquid form  one of the drinkable skincare solutions is  a  new digestible Hyaluronic Acid drink  these companies that make these these products are at the forefront of the trend for drinkable skincare solutions. There are other drinkable solutions that can help with psoriasis by keeping it to a minimum while reducing the painful itching.

Drinkable mosquito repellant  -These nasty bugs are everywhere, and  can give you the  painful Chikungunya virus  to gain extra protection against mosquito bites, you could try using Harmonized Water Mosquito this  will keep me protected from mosquitoes all year long without resorting to irritating insect repellent sprays. Use a spoon to create the perfect winged liner- Holding the handle of  the spoon against the outer corner of your eye, draw the straight line as the first step for your cat eye. Then turn the spoon around so it’s hugging your eyelid, use the rounded outer edge to create a perfectly curved winged effect.

Use that same spoon to avoid mascara marks on your upper eye lid- Hold the spoon so it’s hugging your eyelid and then apply your mascara like you normally do. As you sweep the mascara wand against your lashes and the back of the spoon watch as the residue coats the back of the spoon and not your skin.

Don’t forget that you can also use cold spoons to reduce puffy eyes, pop them in the fridge first or if you are short on time then just run them under the cold tap for a couple of minutes, we obviously mean metal spoons not a wooden spoon as this would definitely not have the same effect.
