The effects of sleep deprivation

Today we are looking at The effects of sleep deprivation

Here are The effects of sleep deprivationThe effects of sleep deprivation

We continue with our sleep blogs and look at The effects of sleep deprivation.
We may think losing sleep isn’t a big problem but sleep deprivation has a wide range of negative effects that go way beyond daytime drowsiness. Lack of sleep can affect your judgment, coordination, and reaction times. In fact, sleep deprivation can affect you just as much as being drunk.
The effects include:
  • Fatigue, lethargy, and lack of motivation
  • Moodiness and irritability
  • Reduced creativity and problem-solving skills
  • Inability to cope with stress
  • Reduced immunity; frequent colds and infections
  • Concentration and memory problems
  • Weight gain
  • Impaired motor skills and increased risk of accidents
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, and other health problems

Sleep deprivation can add to your waistline

Have you ever noticed that when you are over tired you crave sugary foods for energy.  Sleep deprivation has a direct link to overeating and weight gain.
There are two hormones in your body that regulate normal feelings of hunger and fullness. Ghrelin stimulates appetite, while leptin sends signals to the brain when you are full but when we don’t get enough sleep, your ghrelin levels go up, stimulating your appetite so you want more food than normal and your leptin levels go down, meaning you don’t feel satisfied and want to keep eating. The more sleep you lose, the more food your body will crave.
Sleep can lead to loss of brain cells
Missing sleep may lead to brain damage, according to new research ,  many assume that naps and sleeping in on weekends can help you catch up on your sleep  but that strategy won’t fix the damage you may have already done to your brain. Missing out on sleep for consecutive nights may do more than make you pour a larger coffee it may lead to irreversible damage of brain cells.
Researchers have now linked extended wakefulness with injury to, and loss of, neurons that are essential for alertness and optimal cognition.  Extended wakefulness occurs when the body is awake for periods outside of usual sleep periods, this can be working a night shift for three days, then spending the remainder of the week on a usual cycle or revising for an exam in the nights leading up to the test, then resuming your regular schedule.
What is important with chronic sleep disorders is that there have been studies that if you’re actually sleep deprived over time you lose the sense of how impaired you are as you feel like it’s just your normal self.  Sleep loss is a major health problem, as well as a quality of life problem.
Long term sleep deprivation saps the brain of power even after days of recovery sleep and that could be a sign of lasting brain injury.
Research continues on this and they are hoping their research will result in medicines that will help people working odd hours cope with the consequences of irregular sleep.
After reading our blog on The effects of sleep deprivation you probably want to take yourself to bed.

Myths and Facts about Sleep

Myths and Facts about Sleep

We are going to continue  with looking  at sleep but today is Myths and Facts about Sleep

Interesting Myths and Facts about Sleep

There is a lot of misleading information about the right amount of sleep we are going to set the record straight with  Myths and Facts about Sleep;
  • Myth 1: Getting just one hour less sleep per night won’t affect your daytime functioning. You may not think that you are  noticeably sleepy during the day, but losing even one hour of sleep can affect your ability to think properly and respond quickly. It also compromises your cardiovascular health, energy balance, and ability to fight infections.
  • Myth 2: Your body adjusts quickly to different sleep schedules. Most people can reset their biological clock, but only by one–two hours per day at best. It can take more than a week to adjust after traveling across several time zones or switching to the night shift.
  • Myth 3: Extra sleep at night can cure you of problems with excessive daytime fatigue. The quantity of sleep you get is important, but it’s the quality of your sleep that you  have to pay attention to.  Because if you are sleeping eight or nine hours a night but don’t feel well rested when you wake up its  because the quality of your sleep is not very good and maybe you need to look at what is causing you to have a restful sleep.
  • Myth 4: You can make up for lost sleep during the week by sleeping more on the weekends. Although doing this will help relieve part of a sleep debt, it will not completely make up for the lack of sleep. By sleeping later on the weekend your  your sleep-wake cycle will be out so that it is much harder to go to sleep at the right time on Sunday night and get up early on Monday morning.

The power of sleep

The Power of SleepThe power of sleep is todays topic

How important is the The power of sleep

We are going to be looking at The power of sleep and why it is so important to get the right amount of sleep each day. We as the human race try to sleep as little as possible.  A we think that there are things that are more  interesting or more important than getting a few more hours of sleep, but just as exercise and nutrition are essential for optimal health and happiness, so is sleep. The quality of your sleep directly affects the quality of your waking life, including your mental sharpness,  your productivity, emotional balance, creativity, physical vitality, and even your weight. No other activity delivers so many benefits with so little effort!
Understanding sleep
First you need to understand why we sleep While you body  rests, your brain stays busy, overseeing a wide variety of biological maintenance that keeps your body running in top condition, preparing you for the day ahead.  If you  skip this important part of the day, you won’t be able to work, learn, create, and communicate at a level even close to your true potential.  If you regularly skimp on sleep then  you’re headed for a major mental and physical breakdown.
But if you get the amount of sleep that your body requires, your energy and efficiency will go up. In fact, you’re likely to find that you actually get more done during the day than when you were skimping on sleep.
How many hours sleep do you need?
According to the National Institutes of Health, the average adult sleeps less than seven hours per night. Now six or seven hours of sleep may sound pretty good. In reality, though, it’s a recipe for chronic sleep deprivation. You may be asking your self how come this is because, there is a big difference between the amount of sleep you can get by on and the amount you need to function optimally. Just because you’re able to operate on seven hours of sleep doesn’t mean you wouldn’t feel a lot better and get more done if you spent an extra hour or two in bed.
While sleep requirements  do vary from person to person, most healthy adults need between seven and a half to nine hours of sleep per night to function at their best. Children and teens need even more  the common theory that that we need less sleep as we age,  is not trues as older people still need at least seven and a half to eight hours of sleep.
The best way to figure out if you’re getting enough  sleep is to evaluate how you feel as you go about your day. If you are getting enough sleep, you’ll feel energetic and alert all day long, from the moment you wake up until your regular bedtime.
Average Sleep needs by age are;
  • New born to 2 months – 12-18 hrs
  • 3 – months to 1 year – 14-15 hrs
  • 3 – 5 years 11-13 hrs
  • 5 – 12 years 10 – 11 hrs
  • 12 – 18 years 8.5 -10 hrs
  • Adults -7.5 – 9 hrs
There is so much information  on  The power of sleep we will be covering it again at a later date

Bizarre Plastic Surgery Procedures

Bizarre Plastic Surgery ProceduresBizarre Plastic Surgery Procedures

We have been doing some research and have found some Bizarre Plastic Surgery Procedures

Some of the Bizarre Plastic Surgery Procedures  are just weird others just make you think why would you want that done.

Bizarre Plastic Surgery Procedures  seem to becoming the norm,if  you think most people who go under the knife for cosmetic procedures and only ask for bigger breasts and smaller stomachs? you would be wrong. Plastic surgery is more than just breast implants, liposuction, and facelifts.
Here is some of the weird and wonderful cosmetic surgeries that people ask for;
The Grin lift  - As we get older the corners of the mouth can droop. But for an unlucky minority, this permanent scowl can make them look perpetually grumpy. The grin lift is the most effective way to turn this frown upside down.
Chubby cheek surgery - Chubby cheeks are cute in kids, but can make some adults look overweight or jowly. This can be improved by a buccal lipectomy this causes the cheek hollows to contour inward, improving the jowly or “chipmunk cheek” look.
Bra line back lift  - Many women complain to their plastic surgeons about having back fat  this is unsightly rolls of fat which make their bras fit uncomfortably. In the past, our only real surgical option was to liposuction this fat away, sometimes leaving the patient with loose skin. Now a days the can have plastic surgery to remove just that.
Change your iris colour - silicone that can be folded and inserted into the eye to cover iris-related abnormalities. They can also change eye color for cosmetic purposes.
Palm line alterations -i n Japan, where palm reading is popular, some people acquire new lines in their palms by way of cosmetic surgery they think that if they have this surgery that they change their  fate if only it was that simple.
Pointy Spock ear cropping - this is called elfing, this  process  makes the  ears all pointy via slicing and dicing is common in the body modification community. We think this has to be the most Bizarre Plastic Surgery Procedures there is and really why would anyone want this .

Life after acrylic nails

If you have just had your acrylic nails removed we are going to help you with Life after acrylic nails

Today we are looking at Life after acrylic nails

Life after acrylic nails
Life after acrylic nails is what we are going to be talking about today and what  tips and advice to follow.
No matter how pretty acrylic nails look, it takes a toll on the health and integrity of the nail bed. Many women who wear artificial acryclic nails with hopes to return to natural nails are shocked when their nails appear brittle, splitting, and thin.
The chemicals involved in any fake nails not  just  acrylic nails, this  unfortunately  can include  nail sculpting powders and gels, can cause damage to the underlying nail. Depending on the extent of artificial wear and the health of the nail prior to having false fingernails applied, damage may vary.
Once the acrylic nails are removed you can then begging to get your nails back to a healthy state;
  • Weekly manicures: Weekly manicures, although an additional expense, will help stimulate the circulation of the nail bed, promoting its growth. You can of corse give your self a manicure each week just soak your nails in warm water for 10 min  you could add a manicure solution the water to help with the first steps to  both the nails and the cuticles.
  • Cuticle oil: Cuticle oil, such as vitamin E or olive oil, should be massaged into the cuticle area . The essential vitamins found in these natural oils will help promote healthy nail growth.
  • Trim nails: As your  nails begin to grow, keep them short. Don’t be in a hurry to let your natural nail gain length; instead, make the overall nail health and thickness  be your goal. A thin, damaged nail that grows quickly hardly stands a chance at surviving for long. Rather than deal with disappointment, understand that your nails need to be kept short while the body rebuilds the damaged tissue
  • Apply strengthening products: Many nail care base coats have strengthening and stimulating properties. Find a base coat that will help strengthen the nail bed and apply the product every three days if needed remember there are lots on the market so buy the one that suits your needs the most.
  • Ridge fillers: Ridge fillers can work wonders for covering up the unsightly torn and jagged ridges that may remain on the nail bed after artificial nail removal. Apply a ridge filler directly under your nail polish layer as a base layer.
  • Avoid colour: Although you can still paint your nails as desired, the less exposure to chemicals the better for your nails as they rebuild their strength. If you must wear nail polish, try alternating one week one, one week off this still gives your nails time to heal.
  • Treat any infection: Acrylic nails that become slightly separated from the nail bed can become a breeding ground for fungus and bacteria If your nails have become thick or discolored, or if you experience redness or pain, see your doctor immediately for treatment. Don’t just cover it up as this will just compact the problem.
Have patience it takes time  returning to natural nails after acrylic nails. It  is a process that requires patience and realistic expectations, once you’ve become used to the durability and thickness of your artificial nails, natural nails may not seem as appealing. Keep in mind the long term benefits of natural nails include less maintenance and reduced chemical exposure, the long term result will be worth it.
Hopefully Returning to natural nails after acrylic nails is a process that requires patience and realistic expectations. Once you’ve become used to the durability and thickness of your artificial nails, natural nails may not seem as appealing. Keep in mind the long term benefits of natural nails include less maintenance and reduced chemical exposure the long term result will be worth it.
Life after acrylic nails let the healing begging.

Spring and Summer make up trends for 2014

The time of year is here for us to look at  Spring and Summer make up trends for 2014

Spring and Summer make up trends for 2014 are here

The hottest Spring and Summer make up trends for 2014 are very colourful this season.
Lips  -Put away your collection of reds and pinks, as  the new red is orange for this season. The shade is super saturated and beckons the warmer months with a warm luscious lips.
Face  -  Pull out that sun kissed bronzer  as a  radiant complexion is always on trend. Warm, healthy skin that looks sunkissed is the hottest and most understated way to greet spring. Give skin a seemingly effortless and natural glow.
Ironically the biggest makeup trend for Spring/Summer 2014 is for little or no makeup. As we don’t all have flawless skin his look is about well-conditioned skin. and a good skin routine.
Eyes -
Eyeliner -now here there is arrange of trends from graphic  cat eyes  or winged liner, or you can mix it up and add white, yes you heard white liner is back this time you an wear it on the top liner and bottom, and even on the lids not sure you should wear it on all three it the same time you might look a bit weird.
Eyeshadow -Blues are here to stay well for  a while longer at least but this time you can go  as you like this season. It’s a continuation from 2013 when the trend returned, but this season there’s something for everyone from subtle liner to blocks of shadow.

If Orchid, lilac and lavender shades are invading your makeup bags. Thats because the next trend is purples but you don’t have to wear this on your eyes you can add it to your lip or nails to complement your make up.

Lashes –
now this next bit might seem a bit odd but the trend for lashes to  have False lashes top AND bottom. Yes the modern 60′s look doesn’t require you to pull your eye lashes out and then draw them in, but just add false lashes to the top and bottom .
Eyebrows – now this next one we just don’t get at all but i guess someone must like it otherwise it wouldn’t still be here. Schoolboy brows! – basically untidy unkept eyebrows with no shape man brows we are going to call them  man brows never mind school boy hopefully the arch will reappear soon.
And that brings us to close on  Spring and Summer make up trends for 2014

What do our spots on our face mean

What do our spots on our face meanMost of us get them but What do our spots on our face mean

Today we are going to try and answer this question What do our spots on our face mean

Most people suffer with spots at some time in their lives, as teenagers or adults but What do our spots on our face mean.
Forehead spots- Experts believe that your forehead is the area that reveals how well your body is eliminating toxins. It is said that the top part is related to the bladder, the middle is digestion and the lower part, which runs between your eyebrows is related to your liver so you may find that you get spots here just after a night out.
Spots in and around your eyebrows or on your temples relate to the adrenal glands which sit on top of your kidneys and stress can be a cause of these but exercise can help with stress so try that to help keep those spots at bay.
Spots around your mouth- Small spots around your mouth that look red and lumpy could be perioral dermatitis which is quite common, the cause is for this is unknown but it may mean you need to eliminate products you have been using on the face.
Perioral dermatitis is often mistaken for eczema and therefore people try using over the counter eczema creams which just make the spots worse. One of the common symptoms of PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) is acne which affects 1 in 10 women, particularly around the mouth and chin. It is advised that you see your GP if you suspect you maybe suffering from PCOS.
Cheek spots- In Chinese medicine the cheeks are related to the lungs, so if you suffer with regular colds, flu and asthma you may get outbreaks or irregularities in skin tone and texture on your cheeks. Another cause is rosacea which is extremely common in fair-haired people and can look very similar to acne so many people are misdiagnosed.
Drinking alcohol, eating spicy food and caffeine have been associated with rosacea, as they are inflammatory.  If the spots are flaky, it may be seborrheic dermatitis which can look similar but can also occur in the middle of your chest and in your armpits, it is always best to see your GP if you are worried.
Spots on your chin & upper lip area- Spots usually appear on either side of your chin and on your upper lip at different stages in your menstrual cycle, these are linked to your hormones. It has been said that you can possibly tell which ovary (left or right) you are ovulating from according to which side of your chin breaks out.
There are over the counter remedies and specialist skincare treatments that can help with these type of spots, plus certain brands of contraceptive pill can help reduce outbreaks here.
So we hope we have answered the question What do our spots on our face mean.

Lash-Enhancing Serums

Everyone seem to be buying them but  Lash-Enhancing Serums

Today we are gong to be look at Lash-Enhancing Serums

If you have  been awe by a colleague’s remarkably long eyelashes  it might be because she’s using a lash serum but  how good  are Lash-Enhancing Serums
Luscious, lustrous, thick, dark eyelashes are the envy of women all over the world. The longer and thicker your eyelashes, the bigger and brighter your eyes look no mention younger you look. It is  no a surprise that products that promise to enhance or stimulate eyelash growth are flooding the market.  Although you have lots of products from which to choose.  which of course some work, some don’t  most are expensive.
But what is in the magic  serum, well  some of the ingredients are similar to ones used in glaucoma drugs. In fact one of the side effect to glaucoma medicine is long lashes, ( we wouldn’t call that a side effect lol). But are these products safe to be used on non glaucoma stuffers?
One of the companies that makes lash serums did a study to see if there was any negative side effects. After the study although they some saw some  dramatic results  there were no problems, there is however a very small risk from these Lash serums that is could cause  a darkening of light irises, though so far this side effect has been observed only in patients using glaucoma drugs (drops placed directly in the eye). A slight change in pigmentation of the skin along the lashline is also a possibility. but otherwise they seem to get the all clear.
Just a quick note to finish with, you will only notice eyelash growth after two to four months of daily  use with lash serums. Some claim to be quicker but you need to remember that it takes up to 8 weeks for your lashes to replenish  them selves, and if stop using the serum your lashes will return to their prior appearance in four to six week. Nothing that we  artificaly add to the body will change it permanently unless its surgery.
So there you go yes lots of Lash-Enhancing Serums work and they seem safe

What wrinkles mean

We are now looking into What wrinkles mean

What wrinkles mean

So today we move onto What wrinkles mean

Yesterday we looked at how wrinkles form and now today we move onto What wrinkles mean.
As we get older and get wrinkles we generally want to avoid them as much as possible.  Cutting down on alcohol, protecting ourselves in the sun and not smoking will help keep wrinkles away.
These things are helpful to avoid wrinkles but have you ever thought that your wrinkles may be saying something about your health.
Research has discovered that facial wrinkles are connected to the aging of our brain.  Studies have shown the more wrinkle that we have the more impact it has on the aging of our brain.  Further research has found that looking at the state of our skin can tell alot about the health of our brain.  The rate our brain ages depends on external factors and genetics.  Hormones play an important role in keeping our brain and skin healthy, having a deficiency in certain hormones can be linked to varies forms of cognitive impairment and dementia.
By not using sunscreen we disturb our immune system which triggers inflammation which damages the skin and ages the brain, remember that the skin and brain cells come from the same embryonic tissue which is why they age at the same rate.  However physical and mental exercises can be used to keep our brain and skin healthy.  It is advised that you should try to avoid toxins, stress and alcohol, this will slow the effect of aging not just our skin but our brains as well.
We will be looking at more health issues connected to What wrinkles mean  in future blogs.

How wrinkles form

Not all wrinkles are the same today we are looking at How wrinkles form

If you are worried about wrinkles hopefully after you read about  How wrinkles form you will feel better about it.

All wrinkles are not the same and we are going explain How wrinkles form  and how to slow the process down.
Some wrinkles are age related, while others are caused by dehydration, environmental factors, or lifestyle. There are also expression lines, which are created by our facial muscles every time we make any of kind of expression. They’re especially visible on the forehead and around the eyes and mouth.
The best way to smoother-looking skin is to have a great skincare regimen. Women of all ages want better looking skin, and for women in their 30+ (and even their late 20s), that means fighting fine lines—or preventing them from appearing in the first place.
Facial Expression Lines
Expression lines are caused by your emotions. Every time you make a facial expression,  your muscles just below the surface of the skin contract and pull down. Over time, as skin loses its elasticity,  and expression lines form. They’re the deepest kind of wrinkle and the toughest to treat. ( but we don’t suggest you stop laughing because being happy is more important than having  wrinkles)
Get Smoother-Looking Skin
Many women are looking for miracles., but the most important thing is having a great skincare regimen. Every woman should have the correct  cleansing ,toning and moisturising  products for their skin type. These will work together to help keep skin healthy and young looking. You can use an anti-aging products which penetrate the surface of your skin to diminish the appearance of expression lines.
So there is a small bit of information on How wrinkles form next time we are going to cover what wrinkles mean

Eyeliners for beginners

Eyeliners for beginners

Todays topic is on Eyeliners for beginners

There are lots of different eyeliners but which ones are Eyeliners for beginners

Eyeliner is one of theses things that look great if you can apply it well but if you carnet it just looks a smudgy mess.
We have been wearing eyeliner for many years and don’t have a problem putting it on after many years practice. But some people just can’t master it so we thought we would tell you the best Eyeliners for beginners
First all if you are using liquid liner stop, as you need to be a pro to make this look good.
Soft kohl pencil eyeliner
Buy instead a soft kohl pencil eyeliner it can be any colour kohl, Kohl Pencils are a great choice when choosing eyeliners especially if you are a beginner or its just something you struggle with. One the best ones we have found is Maybelline kajal pencils, but Mac do a good pencil as well. Using a soft pencil makes it easier to apply and blend if necessary as It has a silky smooth consistency and has a matte finish. Kohl pencils are easy to blend, if you make a mistake just by softening the pencil line with a cotton bud or makeup brush.
Roll up pencil
Roll up pencil with a built in sharpener to keep the tip of the liner sharp and precise without having to deal with tons of pencil shavings. This liner comes in many colours to enhance your natural eye colours.
Felt tip Liner
Felt tip  eyeliner  are great for beginners since it goes on like a marker  and are easy to use. There are lots of different thickness of this type liner which is great but  it is best to test before buying though as some drag the skin and don’t show up very well. You use this in the same way you would  use a pencil just remember  they are not as easy to blend.
This concludes the  best Eyeliners for beginners tomorrow we will take a look at some others

Choosing a Bronzer For Fair skin

Choosing a Bronzer For Fair skinChoosing a Bronzer For Fair skin is not as hard as you would think!

Here are some tips Choosing a Bronzer For Fair skin

Having thats sun kissed look can sometimes be tricky if you are fair skinned we are going to help with tips on Choosing a Bronzer For Fair skin
Women with deeper skin tones look best wearing more heavily pigmented bronzers, but if you’re on the paler side, bronzers can often overwhelm your complexion. But this doesn’t mean you have to look like an Oompa Loompa to get a sun-kissed glow.
The key to finding your perfect shade is to only go one to two shades darker than your natural complexion. Any darker than that and you will start to look a bit of a strange colour
Fair skin looks lovely in sheer, beige-browns or in honey-toned bronzers with hints of peach or shimmery pink, by adding a touch of golden warmth will blend into your skin seamlessly. You could also use a mosaic-style bronzer that contains several light-reflecting pigments for a customized fit.
When it comes to fair skin, the “less is more” mantra is particularly true in terms of amount of product applied. But that’s not all. if you are are sure if the shade will suit you go for always go with the bronzer that’s lighter than what you think you’ll actually need.
Bronzer warms up the face, but by adding a touch of of peach, coral, or rosy-hued cream blush on to your  cheek bones  will add a brightening finishing touch.
If you’re still not sure and are worried that it will not look natural use a  face powder that’s one shade darker than your natural colouring is a great bronzer substitute.
We hope this helps you when Choosing a Bronzer For Fair skin for a sun kissed look.
